Gilroy is a charter city which employs a City Council made up of seven members with four-year terms, including a separately elected mayor, who can serve more than a single term. Gilroy offers a variety of excellent community facilities and resources placing the city high in recent "quality of life" surveys in the Bay Area cities.

Major community facilities include: St. Louise Regional Hospital along U.S. Highway 101, Wheeler Manor, a senior residence, and an expanded Senior Center complex at Sixth and Hanna streets.

Gilroy's ethnic population breakdown is 47.7% Caucasion, 47.3% Hispanic, 3.4% Asain, 1% Black, .4% American Indian, and .3% other as of 1990, however, the school age population, is over 50% Hispanic.

Gilroy is centrally located within a short driving distance of Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz, the San Joaquin Valley, and the San Francisco Bay Area and  is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 101 and California State Highway 152. Gilroy is situated at the crossing of U.S. Highway 101 and California State Highway 152.

A $23 million project that was recently approved will allow for several major improvements to Highway 152 between Pacheco Pass and Highway 101 in the Gilroy. Improvements to the Highway 101 and Highway 152 interchange will widen a section of Highway 152 from two lanes to four, and install traffic signals at Frazier Lake Road, Furlong Avenue, and Ferguson Road. Much of the widening project is expected to be completed by early 2003. The completion date for the traffic signals is the fall of 2004. The project is being funded by a half-cent sales tax that Santa Clara County voters approved in 1996.

Gilroy offers a variety of fine dining, from fresh garlic to gourmet and plenty of take-out, dining in Gilroy is a gourmand's dream.

History is preserved in Gilroy with six buildings listed on the National Register. The Gilroy Historical Museum is housed in the 1910 Carnegie Library on the corner of Fifth and Church Streets. The museum offers walking tours of historic homes and buildings in the downtown core.

Gilroy has 12 beutiful parks ranging in size from 1/8 to 125 acres, making the City of Gilroy the winner park design awards from the California Park and Recreation Society more often than any other city in California, with awards for Christmas Hill Park, San Ysidro Park, Las Animas Park, and El Roble Park among others. Two on Gilroy's newest facilities include neighborhood parks next door to Luigi Aprea School and Rod Kelley School.

Besides Gilroy's excellent park system, there are a number of area attractions that homeowners enjoy, Including:

  • Garlic Festival - For 24 years, Gilroy has been host to the Garlic Festival, featuring gourmet food, live entertainment, great arts & crafts & fun for the whole family. Held yearly on the last full weekend of July. Gilroy is famous for being the "Garlic Capital of the World" where over 125,000 visitors attend each year.

  • Gilroy Golf Course - offers a nine-hole course, and within the Southern Santa Clara Valley area there are a total of eleven golf courses to choose from.

  • Bonfante Gardens - Bonfante Gardens features acres of fun and beauty encompassing 19 rides and 20 attractions including theme gardens, food concessions, an event plaza, and 19 of the world famous Circus Trees, a 1927 Illions carousel, waterfalls, topiaries - all set within its 600 acre preserve.

  • Wineries - Fine wine connoisseurs in Gilroy enjoy a variety of family owned wineries abundant throughout the area. Many offer tours, seasonal events, picnic areas, and gift shops.

  • Eagle Ridge Golf Club - This 18 hole championship golf course - designed by golf legend Johnny Miller is located in the western foothills of Gilroy in the heart of a master planned residential community, however, it is open to the public.
     

  • New Horizon Arabian Horse Association - Founded in 1978, the club is an active group of Arabian horse enthusiasts whose major purpose is to promote the Arabian breed serving an area from San Jose to Salinas, Monterey and up to Fremont. Homeowners can enjoy seasonal spectator show events and members compete in major competitions.
     

  • Goldsmith Seeds - Located along California State Highway 152, the 59-acre site is the chief research and development arm of the company. Visitors are welcome to view the "Field of Dreams" - a 6 acre planting of experimental bedding plants in the summer or visit the one-acre courtyard garden and koi pond during the year. Gilroy has 13 public schools in the Gilroy Unified School District. with about 8,900 students and five private schools serve an additional 400 students, and approximately 4,500 students attend Gavilan College. The Gilroy library is newly refurbished and computerized.

With its Mediterranean climate and mild temperatures, Gilroy's residents enjoy up to 70 percent sunny days, with an average rainfall of about 20 inches per year. The Pacific Ocean nearby keeps temperatures uniform. The average annual temperature is 62.8°, but summer temperatures can reach 100°. The average high temperature in July is near 90° while winter temperatures drop to an average of 57° in January. Winter lows have been as low as the 20s, with the first freeze usually coming in November. The average date of the last freeze is around March 1.

The agricultural growing season ranges from 300 to 350 days a year. The average relative humidity reaches 90 percent or higher at night in the wintertime, but can drop to around 60 percent during the day. In the summer and fall, humidity is usually around 70 percent at night, but only 40 percent during the day. Winds are usually light to moderate and up to 20 miles an hour out of the northwest.

Gilroy, a "Tree City U.S.A.", has a total of 440 acres of parkland with 86 acres developed with parks ranging from 1/8 acre to 125 acres in size and a number State and County Parks located in close proximity to and recreation areas including:

  • Mt. Madonna Park - A 3,200 acre park with some of California's finest Coastal redwoods is just a 15 minute drive from Gilroy.

  • Adams-Chitactac Park - An original site of the Ohlone Indians, Gilroy is also surrounded by reservoirs which offer homeowners a full range of water sports and recreational activities for the entire family.

  • Henry Coe Park - The second largest state park in California with 80,000+ acres, and the

  • Uvas Creek Park Preserve - A 125-acre creek restoration project and part of the Gilroy's park system with a beautiful natural riparian corridor, nature trails, and an interpretive center.
